Role: Director
Would you like to make a substantial impact on Scotland’s small press scenes and help uplift self-publishing creators? Small Press Scotland CIC is looking for a new director to join our existing team as a partner. You will assist with and oversee event organisation, community engagement, and development of resources and strategies to educate and assist creators working across many creative fields.
SPS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting Scotland’s small press communities, including those working with comics, tabletop games, and zines. We organise two market events, TAGS Festival (Edinburgh) and Sequential Scotland (Glasgow). We advocate for Scottish small press creators and plan to put on professional development and skillsharing days for creators to improve their knowledge and further their careers. SPS has a strong and growing reputation as an organisation that prioritises creators and is taking concrete steps to improve community networks and shared knowledge. Our ideal candidate will share this passion, and may even want to bring their own projects and ideas to SPS. To learn more about SPS and our projects, see our website.
This is a volunteer, unpaid role for the immediate future; all current directors are working on a volunteer or contractor basis dependent on project funding. If full funding is received for our 2027 programme and beyond, we expect to pay all directors a rate of £20/hour for approximately 200 hours a year. Paid work would be contracted to directors and payment must be invoiced for.
Overview:
Location: Remote, but most of our events take place in the central belt and must be attended in-person. Successful applicants MUST reside in Scotland; remote work from other parts of the UK is not possible.
Total hours: Estimated 200 hours a year, about 5 hours a week.
Expected start: February 2027, with directorship being formalised in May 2027 if probation is passed (3 month probation period).
Essential responsibilities once probation has been passed:
- Being appointed as a director of Small Press Scotland CIC on Companies House
- Having a public profile on our website
- Attending directors’ meetings each month and voting on motions
- Holding other directors accountable for their responsibilities and duties
Day-to-day duties:
- Attend monthly SPS meetings to discuss project progress
- Support the organisation and on-day delivery of our market events and professional development days
- Maintain existing and establish new relationships with venues and suppliers as well as key stakeholders, such as Scotland’s small press communities, funding bodies, and collaborators
- Research and review existing resources available for small press creators, and develop new resources where necessary
- Research and highlight opportunities for SPS to collaborate with other organisations, and lead outreach to those organisations
- Maintain websites and social media to effectively communicate about and promote SPS’ activities
- Gather data and feedback on SPS’ activities and prepare accessible, public-facing reports
- Review and maintain policies and other internal documents
We are happy to discuss the above duties and responsibilities in detail ahead of an interview.
Essential knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Significant knowledge of or experience working independently in or adjacently to a small press field (e.g. comics, tabletop games, zines)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to confidently and effectively work in a team as well as independently
- Confident use of Google applications, Dropbox, and newsletter systems
Desirable knowledge, skills, and experience:
- A keen or passionate vision for what you would like to achieve in the role (such as a specific project, form of outreach, or small press niche you would like to represent)
- Significant knowledge of Scotland’s small press communities and the events they attend
- Experience with event, workshop, and/or conference organisation
- Experience with writing funding applications
- Experience with graphic design
- Experience with creating accessible reports and learning resources
- Confident use of Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky
